Following on from the approval of the plans for the new Enchanted Village, Staffordshire Moorlands Council has today also granted the required permission for the proposed extension to the Alton Towers Spa.

The proposals, first submitted in March shortly after the plans for the new accommodation, indicate a number of changes to the existing Spa which is situated within the Alton Towers Hotel and will add approximately 205m² of space to the current site. Situated to the east of the hotel, the new extension will create a dedicated spa reception which will have its own ‘feature door’ and will be accessed via a bridge constructed of timber in-keeping with the existing area. The new entrance area will also feature an ornamental pond with a themed centre feature, which plans suggest will be in the form of a ship, over which the bridge will pass. A new walled spa garden will also be created featuring a hydro-pool, relaxation fire pit and a sunken seating area and sauna.

Although approval has been given the plans are subject to a number of conditions. The resort will have to pre-submit any ‘facing materials’ (materials used on the outside of the extension) to make sure they are in-keeping with the current environment. Protection will also be required to be put in place during construction for any trees covered in the current conservation area. Strict conditions have been imposed on the landscaping of the project, with the resort having to maintain anything planted for a minimum of 5 years. The stone plinth wall, set to be part of the new garden, is also subject to final approval of the design.

It is not yet known when the Alton Towers Resort plan to open the new extension, however as part of the conditions for approval, the resort has to carry out the work this winter (between November and February) suggesting the new extension could be ready for the 2015 season to open alongside the new Enchanted Village.
