Alton Towers Resort have revealed more details of their Mardi Gras event, the brand-new carnival style celebration that is set to dazzle with an explosion of colours, sounds, high-energy entertainment and much more.

The event will see the Resort transformed with music, street performers and food, to create a fantabulous feel-good atmosphere. Each area of the theme park will be represented by its own flamboyantly dressed ‘Krewe’ and static parade float, who, throughout the day, will each be ‘takin it to the streets’ for some high-energy live entertainment.

On each morning of the event, a carnival King and Queen will be chosen from amongst the guests and crowned during a lavish masquerade ceremony on Towers Street. Once anointed, the King and Queen will be treated like VIPs for the entire day, so guests are encouraged to don lots of sparkles, beads, and colour, to increase their chance of being noticed and chosen! The Resort has also launched an appeal to find five local heroes from the across the UK to be crowned carnival King or Queen – to nominate a local hero, people need to share a video on TikTok explaining who they want to nominate and why they deserve to be crowned King or Queen. All entries need to tag @officialaltontowers and use #MardiGrasKingandQueen and must be posted by midday on Friday 14th May 2021.

Also on offer at the event will be a variety of food from around the world including Greek street food, a Chinese noodle bar, stone-baked pizzas, Yorkshire pudding wraps, and a variety of sweet treats, including the Resort’s own take on the classic King Cake.

Chris Carter, Head of Entertainment at Alton Towers Resort, said:

“Mardi Gras is celebrated around the world and it invites people from all communities to come together to enjoy music, entertainment, delicious food, parades and parties.

“We are really excited to be hosting our first ever Mardi Gras inspired takeover at Alton Towers Resort – the core of Mardi Gras worldwide is about bringing people together and celebrating your local community, which is something we are really keen to tap into. We’ve got an incredible line-up of live entertainment, each themed area of the park will be represented by its own Krewe, and every day we will be crowning carnival Kings and Queens in a lavish masquerade ceremony, which we’re sure our guests will love.”

Mardi Gras will take place from 22nd May – 20th June, and the Resort are also promising that guests will have the chance to experience the theme park’s attractions as the sun goes down, although it appears exact opening times are yet to be confirmed.
