Browse these galleries from the archive, which documented the construction of the new hotel and water park complex from the very start in 2001 all the way up to its shaky opening in 2003.

These images provided the ground-level views from the top of the grass bank where the development would be constructed both towards Alton Towers Hotel and over the car parks towards Air. A final image shows Alton Towers Hotel from the sky – note the grass bank at its rear.

Construction is now underway, with ground clearance and site-levelling in progress – the grass bank is no more.

A significant amount of excavation work has now taken place, as shown in these photos from the Monorail station, Alton Towers Hotel, and Air’s queue line.

Construction of the new hotel is well underway, with most of the main structure work complete. The hotel is being heavily advertised to park guests who can already book a room for the opening next spring!

The metalwork and cladding continues to progress at a rapid pace.

The hotel’s roof is now in place with work continuing throughout closed season. Also included are a few photos from within the water park itself. The construction site for the Conference Centre is also shown.

These photos show that the water park’s slides have begun to be installed, together with the required water supply.

While the hotel exterior now looks largely complete, it is evident from the sections of water slides staged in the car parks, together with other construction materials, that there is still lots to do inside.
