Alton Towers officially announced earlier this morning that it has had to take the difficult decision to shut its gates today for the first time this season due to the bizarre twist in the weather conditions striking the UK today, including plummeting temperatures, snow fall, heavy rain and gale force winds.

Guests arriving at the Resort earlier this morning were greeted by staff on the car park to advise that the park would not be operational today due to the inclement weather conditions in the area. Many rumours were circulating that the park was closed due to a power issue, but this has not been confirmed by the Resort – only that the closure was indeed due to inclement weather conditions, mainly high winds affecting the safety of guests.

A message was also later posted on AltonTowers.com to inform guests that the park would be closed today.

With today still being a potentially busy day for the Resort at Easter Half Term, the news has caused a rather large outcry on Alton Towers’ Facebook page, including guests who had arrived without warning being given in advance, and many guests enquiring as to the validity of tickets that were purchased or awarded in advance for todays date.

The Resort has said that any advanced purchased tickets will be valid for another visit, and should be presented at a future date for redemption.

The Theme Park is expected to re-open tomorrow and the Hotels, Waterpark and Spa remain unaffected.
